Staying Safe on the Side of the Road

Well, it’s happened- you got a flat tire, or your car broke down, and now you’re stuck on the side of the road. What are your next steps? How do you stay safe and get help fast? Today on the blog, your friends at Mile’s Towing Service are answering these questions and more so you can stay safe out there!

Stay Visible

The first thing you need to do is make sure your car is completely off the road, and you are completely visible at all times. Next, activate the hazard lights. This will let other drivers know your car won't move and you're having problems, even if it's bright outside. You can also set up an early warning device, such as a road flare or a reflective triangle, to alert other motorists. These tools come in handy, especially at night, if your car breaks down in a blind spot or if it broke down around a bend.

Don't Accept Unsolicited Help

In a perfect world, an offer to help would always be sincere and never result in anything bad. However, it is usually advisable to remain in your vehicle and politely decline any offers from strangers to keep safe. The wise course of action is to remain visible in public or secured safely in your car unless you feel comfortable accepting help. It's also a good idea to confirm that the towing company you called is the one that comes. If you're unsure, call them again and request the driver's identity or the license plate number of the tow truck for confirmation.

Choose a Trusted Tow Company

When you find yourself stranded on the side of the road, it can be very easy to make the mistake of calling the first tow company you find. Understandably, you would want to choose the closest one to your location. However, just because they are close doesn't mean they will come the fastest and certainly doesn't mean they are reliable and able to handle the job. Instead of panicking, take a moment to research quality towing companies and find one that has good reviews and offers the roadside assistance you need.
