What to Do If Your Car Is Stuck in the Snow

Getting stuck in the snow is a pretty common car problem that has something in common with losing your keys or locking yourself out of your car: These problems generally happen at the worst possible time and cause headaches, but they all have relatively easy fixes. Most of the time, taking a few precautions or trying a few tricks can get you back on the road in no time. But when that doesn’t work, your friends at Miles Towing Service will be there for you.

What to Do If You Get Stuck in the Snow

Clear a Path

During the winter months, we always recommend keeping a few necessary items in your car to help in case of emergency. A small shovel can help, as it can be used to dig the snow and ice away from the tires. Try to free up a few feet in front of and behind the tires so you can move the car back and forth to get enough momentum to get yourself out of the snow. Be sure to also dig out any snow under the front or middle of your car that is higher than its ground clearance.

Rock It Free

Very carefully, switch back and forth from drive to reverse to help dislodge some of the snow around your wheels. Be careful not to wreck your transmission by switching back and forth too quickly. When you change gears, you should always have your foot on the brake and the car should not be in motion. Also, never floor the gas, as it will be momentum that frees your car, not power.

Recruit Your Friends

Friends or friendly onlookers may be able to help by simply pushing your car out of the snow. Gently press on the gas while the car is being pushed for additional momentum and remember to make sure the car is in forward gear and the ground isn’t too slippery. Safety first!
